Asantehene Urges Ghanaian Ownership in Mining Sector

Official News Report | Eye on Western North Digital

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on the government to grant large-scale mining concessions to capable Ghanaian investors, emphasizing that this move would significantly benefit the country. Speaking at a meeting of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stressed that Ghanaians should be prioritized in the mining sector, allowing them to partner with foreign companies if needed.

The monarch also urged traditional leaders to focus on securing equity stakes in mining ventures rather than solely relying on royalty payments. He cited the example of Johannesburg, South Africa, where indigenous control over mining enterprises has driven national development and wealth creation.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s stance aligns with growing advocacy for economic empowerment and resource nationalism in Ghana, as the country seeks to maximize the value derived from its natural resources. He emphasized that Ghana’s longstanding challenge has been the inability to fully capitalize on its resources in the competitive global market.

The Asantehene’s call is part of ongoing efforts to review Ghana’s Mineral and Mining Act, 2006 (ACT 703), with proposals aimed at promoting local participation and ensuring sustainable development.
