Western North’s Acting Regional Rent Control Manager says housing costs in the two towns now exceed those in Kumasi, raising concerns over affordability and labor retention.
Rent costs in Sefwi Wiawso and Dwenase have risen above those in Kumasi, creating affordability challenges that are pushing some workers to leave the area, according to the Acting Regional Rent Control Manager for the Western North Region.
Speaking on SefwiNews’ Ekuro yi mu nsem program on Friday, May 8, 2026, Aps. Steve K.e. Ampeh said the trend is affecting labor mobility in the region.
“Rent costs in Sefwi Wiawso & Dwenase are more expensive compared with Kumasi, pushing some workers away,” Ampeh stated during the broadcast.
Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, is Ghana’s second-largest city and typically commands higher housing prices than smaller regional towns due to population density and economic activity. Ampeh’s comments suggest that supply constraints, increased demand, or uneven enforcement of rent regulations may be driving prices upward in parts of Western North.
The Ekuro yi mu nsem segment, which translates to “Inside the News,” focuses on regional issues affecting communities in the Sefwi enclave. The program airs daily from 12:30 PM to 8:00 PM on SefwiNews Online TV and across the outlet’s social media platforms.
The Rent Control Department is mandated under Ghana’s Rent Act to regulate tenancy agreements and ensure fair rental practices. Ampeh did not provide specific figures during the segment, but indicated that the situation is impacting workers’ decisions to stay in the region.
Sefwi Wiawso serves as the capital of the Western North Region, while Dwenase is a key town within the area. Both towns have seen increased economic activity in recent years linked to agriculture, mining, and public sector employment.
