A former Member of Parliament for Sefwi Akontombra,Alex Djornobuah Tetteh, has sparked outrage with allegations that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is using the “Big Push” initiative to embezzle taxpayer money. Hon Tetteh claims that the actual amount allocated to Mr. Michael Aidoo for construction projects is supposed to be GHC280 million instead of GHC469 million, raising concerns about corruption, misuse of state funds, and construct inflation.
The “Big Push” is a $10 billion infrastructure development program aimed at modernizing Ghana’s roads, railways, and other critical facilities. However, critics argue that the program lacks transparency, with many contracts awarded through sole sourcing, which can lead to inflated costs and corruption.
In an interview with De Beat News, Hon Tetteh further alleged that Mr. Michael Aidoo, who is the NDC Western North Regional Chairman and a Council of State member, has been awarded an inflated contract despite already benefiting from state resources, including a Land Cruiser and a salary higher than that of an MP.
The Minority in Parliament is demanding full disclosure of the contracts, citing concerns over accountability and value for money. They want the government to publish the names of contractors, scope of work, and unit cost per kilometer to ensure transparency.
The government has defended the program, stating that it’s lawful and transparent, with 44% of contracts awarded through sole sourcing and over 400 contracts procured through open competitive tendering. However, critics argue that sole sourcing can lead to corruption and inflated costs.
Hon Tetteh also accused Mr. Michael Aidoo of being involved in campaigning against him in the 2024 general election, stating that he is an “alien” in Sefwi Akontombra and should be voted against.
In the voice of Hon Alex Tetteh many calling for an investigation into the “Big Push” initiative. The outcome of the investigation is eagerly awaited, as Ghanaians demand accountability and transparency in the use of taxpayer funds.
