MTTD Grounds Sefwi Asawinso SHS Mini Bus Over Roadworthiness; Headmaster Appeals for Pickup and Replacement Bus

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has banned the mini school bus belonging to Sefwi Asawinso Senior High School from operating on public roads, citing its poor roadworthy condition.

According to school authorities, the MTTD inspected the vehicle and declared it unfit for transporting students, stating it was “not worth roadworthy.” The directive takes immediate effect, leaving the school without a functional vehicle for official and student transport.

The Headmaster of Sefwi Asawinso SHS, Mr Richard Anane has appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders for urgent intervention. He is requesting the provision of an administrative pickup for school operations and a replacement bus to ensure students’ safe movement to and from school and for academic activities outside campus.

The move aligns with the MTTD’s ongoing nationwide crackdown on unroadworthy and overloaded school vehicles. In previous operations, the unit has impounded buses with fake roadworthiness certificates, worn-out tyres, overloading, and other violations that endanger students. Officials have repeatedly warned that vehicles with visible defects should not be used, regardless of whether they hold a certificate.

School heads in similar cases have called for government support to maintain and replace aging fleets. The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools has stressed the need for a strong maintenance culture to keep donated vehicles serving students longer. Government has distributed vehicles to selected SHSs in recent years as part of efforts to improve logistics under the Free SHS policy.

For now, the Sefwi Asawinso SHS administration says it is working to make alternative arrangements while awaiting a response to its appeal.
