New Papase Apostolic Basic School in the Bia West District of the Western North Region of Ghana is facing severe infrastructure challenges that are threatening both pupil safety and learning.
The classrooms are dusty, poorly furnished, and structurally weak, making it difficult for pupils to sit comfortably and for teachers to work in a safe and conducive environment.
Headmaster Mr. Damoah Nicholas said leaking roofs and fragile structures often force the school to close during rains or strong winds, disrupting lessons and putting pupils at risk. While some repairs have been made through local community efforts, the overall condition of the buildings remains largely unresolved, prompting concern among parents and staff.
The unsafe conditions have also affected teacher morale, with several requesting transfers due to the harsh working environment. Many parents have withdrawn their children from the school, while those teachers who remain continue teaching out of dedication to the pupils’ future. School authorities are appealing to the government and non-governmental organizations for urgent support to renovate classrooms, provide adequate furniture, and ensure a safe learning environment.
